Farmgirl Friday Blog Hop #165

apronHappy Friday and welcome to the blog hop!  This has been my first full week home in a very long time and I have LOVED it!

We have been outside alot this week cleaning up neglected gardens.  You can read about my first clean up in my flower garden.  Have any of you ever gotten so far behind you thought you’d never “catch up” and then simply had lots of fun trying!?!

IMG_20140703_084031423_HDR

That brings me to my new mantra of I am not behind, I am just starting.  I adopted this last week when I came home and I started fretting over all the gardening stuff I had missed.  I opened up my Indiana book and saw there were still lots and lots of things I could do starting now, so my planting season kicked off this past weekend.

That is why I loved the blog last week from Back to Basics! She shared the 2014 Planting Guide by zone and I have lots and lots and lots of things I can still do!  So rather than focus on “what could have been”, I will look to “what is now and gonna be.”

I have tons of fun stuff going on with the gardens, bees and our remodel which is underway, but are we farmgirls ever “done”?  Do we want to be? We thrive on what’s happening next. I don’t think any of us can imagine being “done” and not having anything else to do!  We have too many interests and things we love.

Let’s come along and blog hop and share all that groovy stuff you are up to this week. Visit over at Deb of Dandelion House (our blog hop founder and hostess primo) and see what she’s been up to.  She has been finding all kinds of bargains lately that are adorable!!!!

So, do a little bragging on yourself, your homestead and your doin’s!  We are so excited you are here.

Please include the Farmgirl Friday button ( or link back here ) in your post and remember to share this hop with all of your blogging friends!
You don’t have to live on a farm to join this hop!

Farmgirl Friday Blog Hop #139

apron Happy New Year and welcome to the FIRST blog hop of 2014. I hope your holidays were filled with family, laughter and hugs!  We spent time with family, spent time at the beach (we are still there) and spent time reflecting on 2013 and making some goals for 2014.  More on that in next week’s blog.

I am very excited about 2014 and the many ways that I can continue to unleash my inner farmgirl! How about you?  What will you be cooking, growing, painting, sewing, crafting and raising in 2014? This is the place to share that and more.

So, let’s get the new year started.  If you are new to the blog hop we welcome you!  If you are already a dear friend welcome back! Your hostesses are all anxiously waiting to hear from you so hop over to their blogs and say “Happy New Year!”

Burlap Gift Bags

Burlap Gift BagBurlap is so versatile and my daughters love it as much as I do.  All year I have been using it to make my own gift bags.  Recently I made some really cute ones for their St. Nicholas Day gift bags.

We always give a St. Nicholas bag to each of the girls on St. Nicholas Day which generally is a couple of weeks before Christmas.  We put Christmas goodies in it like socks, an ornament, some candy and other little presents that they can enjoy during the holiday season.  Even though they are now adults, the tradition continues and they love getting these little bags and love the little treasures in them.

This year, I made burlap bags to hold the goodies.  Look how simply easy and fun they are to make!

I fold the bag at the bottom so I cut a piece of burlap twice the length of what I want the finished bag to be.  These bags are about 15 x9. The beauty of working with burlap is that it doesn’t need to be perfectly straight; they are rustic you know!

After cutting my pieces I laid them out (I am making 3 bags here) and started decorating.

I cut out felt reindeer and stars to glue onto the front of the bags.  Again, these shapes do not have to be perfect.  The little imperfections make them perfect!  I made the bodies green (doesn’t show well in this pic) and the antlers, ears and noses brown.  Choose any colors that make you happy!

Then get your glue gun or craft glue and start creating!

I added buttons to the stars and googly eyes to the reindeer.  I don’t know about you but I have boxes of buttons from my grandma, mom and aunt.  I can always find some really cool looking buttons in there!

Then I sewed up the side seams with a zig zag stitch.  I just leave the seam on the outside and don’t bother with turning the bags to get the seam inside.  It just adds to the character of the bag I think.

I trimmed the seams just a bit close to the stitching and then filled with goodies.

I used a large knitting needle to pull some yarn through to close and tie up the bag. You could use ribbon too if you wanted to.  All three bags turned out so cute and the girls loved them.  They stated that they were “keepers” to quote one of them.  Aren’t they adorable?

Do you make your own gift wrappings?

Happy Unleashing!

Farmgirl Friday Blog Hop #133

DSCN3546Happy Fall!  I feel like with the time change it has really hit me that autumn is here and Thanksgiving is around the corner.  I LOVE Thanksgiving.  It is my favorite of all holidays. I am finding myself in a total nest mode this week! Shortly I will transition to holiday mode and I will be baking, cooking, crafting, sewing and decorating.  For now, I will take just getting things in order around here.

Speaking of getting things in order makes me think of renovations and remodels since we are in the midst of those too. That explains why I was so taken by this AWESOME idea from Dawna at Prairie Girl.

Look at this fantabulous decorating idea she and her hubby had in a room they are renovating!  Is this not the best?  It makes me want to go out to the pole barn and find a ladder, a wall and transform it to be as cute as this!

What is happening with you this week?  Are you nesting or trying something new?  Are you geared up already for holidays or are you in a mood for tea and a magazine or book?  Whatever you are up to, share it with us on this week’s blog hop!

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MEMBER OF THE FARMGIRL SISTERHOOD to join the FARMGIRL/BOY FRIDAY BLOG HOP.  But why would you not want to be? I feel like I have “found my people” here! 🙂

Farmgirl Friday Blog Hop #130

We are smack in the middle of fall here in Indiana.  Cooler days and even cooler nights.  No frost yet, but you can feel it coming!  SO many fun things to do in the fall!  Festivals, pumpkin picking, apple picking, mums and jumping in leaves.  Last evening we went to see Dracula at Actors Theater in Louisville.  That was such an entertaining yet creepy play to see this time of year.  I was definitely seeing things in the fog driving home late!

We are also trying to extend our gardening into late fall and attempting to over winter some things also.  First try on this (like everything); only time will tell how it goes.  Do any of you extend your gardening? IF so, share today on the blog hop.  I have little to no knowledge in this area and would love to glean whatever I can from all of your expertise!

Speaking of fun fall things, Michelle had the cutest Halloween Decorations last week that she shared on the blog hop.  How great are these??  Check out all of her ideas on her blog!  Thanks for sharing from your blog Michelle’s Little Piece of Heaven!
