Kicking Off Derby Week!

Whether you are a horse race fan or not you can hardly miss when The Kentucky Derby rolls around. Living in Southern Indiana (Kentuckiana as the area is known by) makes this time of year all the more special and it is impossible to resist getting in on the festivities!

The Delta Queen is rolling on the Ohio River…

And Thursday (yesterday) the Kentucky Derby Festival (KDF) kicked off on the riverfront. It is very “fair like” with all the best of food. You know, Italian Sausage, Fries, Gyros, Elephant Ears, Funnel Cakes…well you get the drill. But the neatest part of opening night is GLIMMER. Associated with the Derby Festivities is The Great American Balloon Race, and on Thursday night, the balloons visit on the riverfront and give a light filled “glimmer” along the river. Isn’t it pretty?

Friday morning at Bowman Field in Louisville, the balloons fire up and take off. It is so lovely to head out at dark, watch the sunrise, and take in the beauty.

The “Hare Balloon” is first to fill up, rise up and take off. Today’s Hare balloon is US Bank.

There are so many balloons and they are all so unique and pretty. Here are a few. Wicked is my favorite every year!

The order is orchestrated by an KDF Official. This is not the race, so it is awesome to watch each balloon fill up and drift up into the blue skies. This morning was a perfect morning as the winds were minimal and the sun was warming up the earth and melting the frost that had covered everything last night.

Weekend Getaway

VdayHubby surprised me with a Valentine weekend getaway. He definitely is good at making and carrying through on a plan and this was no exception. I did not know where we were headed until shortly before we left. I love surprises especially when they include a little road trip. I was so excited!

He saw an article in Midwest Living magazine on old theaters that had been restored. Franklin, Indiana and the Historic Artcraft Theatre jumped out to him as it is just a couple of hours up the road. AND the Valentine showing was “My Fair Lady” which is a favorite of ours. Here is an old picture of the theatre from their website. Check out the schedule of all the fantastic movies for 2015 – 2016

The theatre popcorn is locally grown Indiana popcorn that is popped at the theatre. It is $2 and includes free refills! Water was $1 and admission was $5. I guess I am a cheap date! 🙂 The theatre was large and an MC introduced the show. Improv players did a 30 second skit to synopsize “My Fair Lady”, prizes were given out and a cartoon played prior to the main show. It was FUN!

Hubby took the other suggestions in the article and made a two night reservation at The Flying Frog Bed and Breakfast where we were treated to a lovely room, 3 course breakfasts and terrific hosts.

We were so enthralled with the food and enjoyment of the other guests at breakfast we have no photos to show as we simply forgot to take some. You will just have to trust me that the Eggs Benedict, stuffed french toast, poached pears, fritata, dipped strawberries and more were all delish!

The Willard served up an awesome Margherita pizza, fried cheese cubes and mircrobrew just like the article said they would. It was a great first evening dinner!

Our waiter recommended a place for dinner on Valentines Day and the next evening we were headed to Taxman Brewing Company.

Taxman did not disappoint for dinner on Valentine’s Day. We headed there before the show and we loved the set up. Long tables on two floors that encourage not only good eating and drinking but socializing as well. The couple we shared a table with were so fun to share our dinner time with. We were fortunate to hit them early (5pm) as we had a short wait but by the time we left the wait was over an hour. This place really is a popular joint and for good reason! The mussels, frites, hamburger and kale salad was to die for. They have excellent chefs there and also talented brewmasters as the beer was really good!

So much was within walking distance and although it was cold it was a cozy, relaxing weekend full of small town fun. And what would Valentine’s Day be without a good bottle of wine and chocolates. I was also treated to some awesome slippers that I wore most of the weekend while at our B&B!

Hope you had a cuddly Valentine’s weekend where ever you were. If you live in Indiana or are passing through don’t pass Franklin Indiana up!

Keep warm!

Fall Birthday Day Trip

DSCN3540I love having a birthday in the fall!  It is such a beautiful time of year, weather is great and the season just screams for a day trip.  Being in Indiana, we ventured to Brown County and Nashville Indiana for a day to celebrate my birthday and the fall.  Brown Country has parks and trails gallore.  And Nashville is a wonderful craft filled town with rows of shops and yummy places to grab a bite or treat.

The weather was perfect for our venture and we started by hiking and just taking in the view.  Leaves are turning and falling from the trees.  I could not have written a better script than what was given to us that day.  Simply beautiful.

On our hike we stumbled upon this great outdoor amphitheater.  We must look up to see what goes on here.  Isn’t it lovely?

We went into Nashville then for an afternoon of browsing and shopping.  Nashville is what I like to refer to as an artsy town.  There is so much creative energy flowing.  It inspires a “non shopper” like me to shop and gives me oodles of ideas to try at home.  Here is hubby with his new found friend. that welcomed him into her shop to view (and buy) her wares!

DSCN3558

The shops show off their merchandise inside and out.  Isn’t this so cute?  It makes you want every single item on your porch at home!  I will show you pics of my selections at the end of my day when I unpacked at home! (so keep reading)

DSCN3559

On the way home, we stopped to buy pumpkins.  This barn was awesome.  You can also pick your own pumpkins here.  We were a little late to do that, so we just got some that were already on display.

The real surprise however were the alpacas that they have!  Aren’t they wonderful?

We headed back home and it was so fun to unpack my goodies that we had gotten.  Since I have a new found love for chickens, but we don’t have any yet, I have been finding other ways to enjoy them.  (Remember Gus the Rooster on my pole barn?).  Take a look at these cuties for my kitchen:

BUT the craftiness doesn’t stop in Nashville.  I received awesome gifts from my daughters for our gardens.  Look at these great veggie markers from spoons, corks and hemp.  I love them and cannot wait to put them outside.

Also for our garden are number markers.  I have 7 beds currently and I am starting to get them confused!  Here are a couple of the bed markers so I can keep them straight.  How great are these?  What wonderful gifts for my gardens and me!

DSCN3583

And what would a day trip be without a visit to Life is Good and a new T shirt?  Look at the PERFECT one that I found!

DSCN3586

Appropriate for our muddy cool weather are the great MUCKS that hubby got me!  I cannot wait to slosh around in the dirt with these babies!

DSCN3589

So happy birthday to me!

And Happy FALL to ALL!  Thank you for reading and sharing in my fun day!
